What a Flag! The Class Biased Flag, By Adeola Soetan

The flag that hates the poor but kowtow to the rogue leaders, the influencial and the super rich. It does not go half down when hundreds and thousands of citizens are massacred by terrorists and their bandits or when killed in national disaster, but quickly flown half mast when one of the leaders or the ruiners is dead. What a flag!

I will always ask and let all continue to ask, when will the Green, White, Green flag representing Wealth and Peace start respecting the poor and the struggling working class in distress or in death?

We know it takes the death of just one of them, Awon Arabi, the real or the ruinous, the good or the bad leader before the flag is ordered to be half-masted. But how many citizens must die, be killed or be massacred before the flag becomes sympathetic and compassionate enough to mourn and respect the poor?

What a flag! Recently, over 200 died of flood disaster in Mokwa, over a hundred citizens massacred in Benue, Plateau, and regular killings by bandits in Zamfara, a major blood field of the nation. As usual, the now made to be arrogant, stone hearted flag ignored these preventable human tragedies. But when ex-president President Buhari Seriki Integrity died, the flag was ordered by the president to be half-masted.

To the credit of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as the then military head of state (1984-85), the flag consciousness in the people was promoted to foster national pride, unity, patriotism and discipline.

Everywhere, offices, homes, schools and inside vehicles, there were flags hoisted with pride by citizens expectant of good governance and good leadership for a greater nation. But to his damnation when he came back as president of Nigeria, national pride, unity and discipline took flight. Citizens now become despair, insecure with increasing mass hunger, poverty, joblessness, flying inflation, socio-economic inequality ethnic hostility unleashed by succesive corrupt rogue leaders who see Nigeria as a captured territory and politics as the most profitable business venture.

How more do we know a nation permanently on reverse gear 41 years after Gen. Buhari promoted nationalism, patriotism and the flag consciousness. Unfortunately, by the time Seriki Integrity died, the flag has disappeared from the citizens and there was no flag available to be be half-masted for the General. What a Flag!!!
