As a human rights activist, I am compelled to address the glaring issue of public fund mismanagement that has plagued our nation for far too long. The Tinubu government’s recent decision to gift players $100,000 each, along with a three-bedroom flat, despite the 30% prize money, raises serious questions about its priorities. This extravagance starkly contrasts with the government’s claim that there is no money for essential public services and infrastructure projects.
It’s disheartening to see the government prioritize such frivolous spending while neglecting critical issues. For instance, civil workers’ salaries are woefully inadequate, and retirees who have served the government for 35 years are still awaiting their payments, despite the receipt protest led by Comrade Omoyele Sowore. This neglect is a clear example of the government’s misplaced priorities.
Daniel Regah’s tweet on platform X resonated deeply with many Nigerians who are fed up with the blatant waste of our collective resources. The tweet highlights the frustration of a populace that feels its government is more interested in lining the pockets of a select few than in serving the public good.
The reality is that the Tinubu government, like many of its predecessors, seems to cater primarily to the interests of the elites. The policies and actions of this administration often appear designed to benefit a privileged few, while the majority of Nigerians struggle to access basic necessities like healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
The waste of public funds is not just a matter of financial mismanagement; it is a human rights issue. When public resources are diverted for personal gain or used inefficiently, it denies citizens their right to basic services and infrastructure that are essential for a dignified life.
To the government, I say this: the era of claiming there’s no money while indulging in extravagance must end. The Nigerian people deserve better. We deserve a government that is transparent, accountable, and committed to using public resources for the public good.
As citizens, we must also take responsibility for demanding better governance. This includes holding our leaders accountable, advocating for transparency in government spending, and participating actively in the democratic process.
The time for change is now. Let us work together to ensure that our government serves the many, not just the privileged few. The future of our nation depends on it.
