TIB National Coordinator Sanyaolu Juwon Rejects Lagos Gov’t’s ‘Court Injunction’ Rumors, Says It Is an Attempt to ‘Squelch’ Protests, ‘Repress’ Freedom

Take It Back Movement’s National Coordinator, Sanyaolu Juwon, has rejected the claims of a purported “court injunction” by the Lagos State government that would curtail the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in the state.

Juwon decried these rumors as a deliberate attempt to “squelch” the voices of protesters and “repress” their freedom of assembly.

The National Coordinator made this known in a tweet following a meeting which some senior lawyers had with the Inspector General of Police. Juwon disclosed his incredulity at reports of a rumored court injunction, expressing his skepticism of the alleged injunction, and describing it as “lawless” and “a joke taken too far.” He further asserted that, despite not having been served any official documents, he considers the injunction a mere rumor.

He wrote, “Shortly after our meeting with @PoliceNG IG where we insisted on our constitutional right to protest, I read a news on @channelstv that the lawless Lagos state government has obtained a court injunction restricting my right to protest. I am yet to be served, and to this end, i take this news as a rumor, and a joke taken too far! . No court order can repress a people’s desire to be free. #RevolutionNow”.

Reports had revealed earlier that the Take It Back Movement, Lagos State chapter has slammed Governor Baabajide Sanwo-Olu for the state’s abuse of judicial privilege to stifle freedom of association through the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

In a statement by its coordinator, Adekunle Adeyemi Taofeek, the group also informed the governor and his government that they must bear responsibility for the movement of protesters from several designations in Lagos to and from Peace Park in Ketu and Gani Fawehinmi Justice Park in Ojota in Lagos.

The TIB Movement, in a statement released after an emergency meeting following the new development, designated seven convergence points for participating citizens. They are “Alausa Secretariat, Lekki Toll Gates, Ikorodu Bus Park, Okota Link Bridge, LASU Campus gates, Iyana Ipaja Underbridge and Agege Pen Cinema.”

The organisation however asked the governor to provide “clean, safe and air conditioned buses” to transport protesters from the convergence points to the two locations approved by the state for the protest.
