Nigerian Education System Fails to Equip Computer Science Graduates with Practical Skills, Written by Benjamin Olawoye

I’m still curious about the purpose of Nigerian institutions when it comes to IT education.

In my opinion, anyone pursuing a career in IT should either study outside Nigeria or attend a dedicated IT school (preferably private) within the country.

Why would someone present me with a BSc in Computer Science and not know basic Linux commands? He doesn’t even know that Linux is an operating system!

When I told him that Linux is an OS, he said “oh, that’s not my field” really?

I then asked, what OS do you use? He said the normal one bro, which one is the normal one??

It is either he forgot the name is Windows or he doesn’t know, I just had to face the other person and left him to remember.

The second guy did not impress me either, how can you claim to develop websites using WordPress, nodejs and also write python, and manage cPanel, but when I ask what cPanel is, he said it’s a database management system? I then asked, if it’s possible to manage website file on cPanel, he said NO Wow, unbelievable. Then I said, “Open debug mode on WordPress,” and he asked me “what is debug mode on WordPress?” go and ask your ancestors.

Please, get your degree along with some real skills. I don’t even want to see another BSc in Computer Science cross my desk again, if you cannot show workings, keep your certificate for now.

School is not scam ooo but we don’t have school in Nigeria.
