In response to the University of Ibadan’s recent tuition fee hike and the issues that surrounds privatization of public education, students are mobilizing for a large-scale protest set to take place on Friday, September 20, 2024.
The planned protest is motivated by a strong belief that access to higher education should be a basic right available to everyone, rather than a privilege afforded to a select few.
A student, Atiba-adediran Emiola Solomon, took to his Facebook account to share news of the upcoming student-led protest.
In the Facebook post, Solomon expressed his dissatisfaction with these developments, emphasizing that education is a fundamental right and not a privilege reserved for the few.
“We will not backdown on the fight against privatization of our public education system, Education is a right not a privilege.”, he wrote.
Calling for action, he encouraged fellow students to join the demonstration scheduled for September 20, 2024, using the hashtags #FeesMustFall, #BabylonMustFall, and #Notohouseagentextortionnow to galvanize support and unite the student body in their shared mission to protect accessible higher education.
“Friday 20th September, 2024 we will return back to the barricades. #FeesMustFall #BabylonMustFall #notohouseagentextortionnow”, Solomon added.
TIB had earlier reported how University of Ibadan students resorted to online begging for financial assistance to cope with the recent tuition fee hike.
Some of the students took to social media to beg for financial assistance to pay their tuition, which was recently hiked by the school authorities.
It was gathered that fees were increased from N230,000 to N412,000.
According to Saharareporters story on the matter, one of the students, Femi said he is at risk of withdrawing from the school if he does not pay the tuition before Friday.
Femi who took to his Twitter handle on Tuesday wrote: “Please sir I’m a student of the University of Ibadan. Our deadline is slated for Friday. Without payment we won’t be able to write exams sir. I hope you help me out with anything sir
“You can DM for any verification, sir.”
