The Unfinished Business of June 12: A Call for Accountability, Written by Ogundipe Daniel

Twenty-eight years have passed since the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, an event that marked a turning point in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy. Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of that election, was denied his rightful place as president, and the country was plunged into a dark period of military rule.

The annulment of the election was a clear subversion of the democratic process, and it had far-reaching consequences for Nigeria. The event sparked widespread protests and unrest, which were brutally suppressed by the military. The aftermath of the annulment saw the rise of General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria with an iron fist until his death in 1998.

Today, we remember the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy and justice in the face of overwhelming oppression. We also recall the role of General Ibrahim Babangida, who as military head of state, annulled the election and set in motion the chain of events that led to Abacha’s rule.

It is time for Babangida to take responsibility for his actions and write an open apology letter to Nigerians. The people deserve to know the truth about what happened on June 12, 1993, and the motivations behind the annulment of the election. Babangida should also reveal the full gist of the June 12 scandal, including the identities of those who were involved in the plot to subvert democracy.

The legacy of June 12 continues to haunt Nigeria today. The country is still grappling with the consequences of that event, including the entrenchment of corruption and the erosion of trust in institutions. It is time for Nigerians to come together and demand accountability from those who have wronged the country.

As we remember the sacrifices of the past, we must also look to the future and work towards building a better Nigeria. A Nigeria where democracy is respected, and the rule of law is upheld. A Nigeria where leaders should be accountable to the people, and the people are free to choose their leaders without fear of intimidation or violence deserve an apology for stressing them all this while as this past action don’t allow most Nigerians have believe in elections.

The unfinished business of June 12 must be addressed if Nigeria is to move forward. It is time for Babangida to take the first step towards healing and reconciliation by writing an open apology letter to Nigerians, make sure his remaining team mate like Obasanjo, Abubakar Salam, and David Mark must be be arrested and face the concequences of their actions. The people deserve nothing less.
