Over 2,000 Killed Due to Insecurity in Nigeria Between January and March 2025 – SBM Report

At least 2,000 people lost their lives in Nigeria between January and March 2025, according to a new report by SBM Intelligence.

Among the fatalities were 136 security personnel. Borno State recorded the highest number of deaths with 515, followed by Zamfara with 408. Other states with high casualty figures include Katsina (155), Benue (101), Niger (68), Anambra (63), Edo (60), Ondo (59), and Kaduna (58).

A closer look at the figures reveals that 892 civilians were killed, along with 462 suspected bandits, 234 Boko Haram members, 119 vigilantes, 66 cultists, and 42 kidnappers.

When analyzed by region, the North West was the most affected, accounting for 706 deaths. The North East followed with 552, while the North Central recorded 273. The South East, South West, and South South recorded 185, 163, and 121 deaths respectively.

The grim figures come amid growing alarm over Nigeria’s deteriorating security landscape. Despite promises of reform and military offensives, violence has remained relentless, unpredictable, and widespread.

The toll is not only a number. Behind every statistic is a story — of families torn apart, towns emptied, and futures shattered.

Security personnel, too, continue to pay the price, with countless killed in the line of duty. In some cases, vigilantes trying to protect their communities have also become casualties.

What is perhaps most alarming is the growing sophistication of these non-state actors. In a recent attack in Wulgo, reports confirmed the use of armed drones by terrorist groups — a chilling indication that Nigeria’s enemies are becoming more technologically advanced, while the nation’s security infrastructure remains sluggish and under-equipped.

Nigeria stands at a critical juncture. If the current trajectory continues unchecked, the country may find it harder to maintain national cohesion, drive economic recovery, or hold credible elections. The cost of inaction is no longer theoretical — it is being paid every day in blood.
