Workers Deserve More Than Holidays – The Struggle Continues!

As we mark this year’s Workers’ Day, the Take It Back Movement – Students’ Wing stands in solidarity with the hardworking people of Nigeria whose relentless contributions form the backbone of our nation.

It is not enough to offer workers a public holiday once a year. This token gesture does not reflect the reality of their sacrifices or the depth of the hardship they endure daily.

Nigerian workers remain grossly underpaid, undervalued, and overburdened—left to grapple with a collapsing economy, skyrocketing inflation, and poor working conditions.

The state uses Workers’ Day to pretend it recognizes their worth, yet it refuses to commit to policies that uplift their welfare.

Worse still, the normalization of this annual 24-hour recognition without real, structural reform reflects how deeply workers have been conditioned to accept crumbs from those who benefit from their labour. We must begin to challenge this narrative.

The TIB Students’ Wing calls for a living wage, improved working conditions, and an end to the exploitation of Nigeria’s labour force. Nation-building is not a one-man job. It is built daily by the sweat, intellect, and resilience of workers—from the classrooms to the hospitals, the factories to the fields.

We join millions across the country and the world to honour Nigerian workers—not just in words, but in struggle.

We reaffirm our commitment to building a society where justice, equity, and dignity are not seasonal, but permanent.

Happy Workers’ Day! The struggle continues!

Signed:
Comrade Oguntola Sunday A.
Coordinator, TIB Students’ Wing
