The Daylight Robbery: Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bill, By Ogundipe Daniel

Nigerians are expressing anger and frustration over the new tax reform bill proposed by the Tinubu administration. The government claims the bill is meant to fix and modernize Nigeria’s tax system, but many citizens see it differently.

To them, it is just another attempt to collect more money from ordinary people who are already struggling to survive. Instead of providing relief, the new policy looks like an additional burden on citizens who are barely getting by in a harsh economy.

If one takes a closer look at the proposed bill, it becomes clear that ordinary Nigerians will suffer the most from these new taxes. Although the government has said that essential goods and services such as food, education, and healthcare will be exempt, that does not change the reality of rising costs across the country.

Prices of everyday items keep going up while wages remain stagnant. Many families can hardly afford basic needs, and now, these new taxes will only make life even harder. It feels like the government is taking from those who have almost nothing left to give.

The truth is that this tax bill is not an isolated problem. It is part of a pattern of government policies that have made living conditions worse for Nigerians. Since the removal of fuel subsidy, transportation costs have soared, and the prices of goods and services have followed. Every market visit is a painful reminder of how much more expensive life has become. Instead of tackling the root causes of poverty, corruption, and bad governance, the government keeps shifting the responsibility onto the people. It is as if Nigerians are being punished for the failures of their leaders.

Across the country, frustration is growing. Many citizens believe that this period can easily be described as one of the hardest times in Nigeria’s history. There is hunger in homes, unemployment continues to rise, and people feel helpless as the cost of living increases daily.

In this situation, introducing more taxes is like adding salt to injury. What the people need is relief, not more financial pressure.

It is time for Nigerians to stand up and resist this unfair and unreasonable tax reform. The first step is to create awareness. Everyone should talk about how this bill will affect daily life and why it must be stopped. People should come together, peacefully protest, sign petitions, and use social media to make their voices heard. Citizens must also demand accountability and transparency from the government.

President Tinubu and his government must listen to the cries of Nigerians. His economic policies appear more focused on figures and foreign praise than on the actual welfare of citizens. So far, what the people have experienced under his leadership is rising inflation, job losses, and deepening poverty. A true leader should be able to balance economic growth with the well-being of the people.

This tax reform bill is a clear example of misplaced priorities. What the country needs is a fairer and more transparent system that ensures the wealthy and those in government pay their share, while the poor are protected. Instead of increasing taxes, the government should focus on cutting waste, fighting corruption, and investing in industries that create jobs and reduce poverty.

Nigerians deserve a government that truly cares about their welfare and understands their pain. The people should not remain silent in the face of policies that threaten their survival. It is time to speak up, to demand fairness, and to insist on a government that puts people before profit. This tax reform bill is a bad idea, and Nigerians must resist it. The future of the country depends on the courage and unity of its people to stand up for what is right.
