Sowore Secures Freedom for Corps Member Wrongfully Accused by Police in False Kidnap Case

An NYSC corps member, Miss Ibrahim Mariam Titilayo, has regained her freedom after an intervention by human rights activist and the Convener of the RevolutionNow movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, following what her lawyer described as an “unlawful arrest, intimidation, and prolonged harassment” by officers of the Nigerian Police Force over a false kidnapping and murder allegation.

According to her counsel, Mr. Tope Temokun, Miss Ibrahim, who is serving in Akure, Ondo State, was “unlawfully arrested on 16th October 2025 without any explanation or warrant by police officers from Abuja.”

She was taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Akure, where her phones; an iPhone 12 Pro Max, an Itel handset and her mifi device were seized.

Temokun said officers led by Inspector Dauda Adamu of the Force Intelligence Department (FID), Abuja, accused the corps member of being linked to “a list of phone numbers allegedly tied to a kidnapping and murder case from January 2024.”

However, Airtel’s verified records confirmed that Miss Ibrahim purchased the SIM in question on 15th April 2025, more than a year after the alleged offence. Temokun stated:
“The officers claimed that one of the numbers linked to her National Identification Number (NIN) was involved in the crime, even though Airtel confirmed the SIM was bought and activated in April 2025. She simply could not have used it in January 2024.”

Despite this evidence, Miss Ibrahim was detained overnight, threatened with being flown to Abuja, and subjected to a medical examination at the Police Clinic in Akure without her consent. She was later granted bail but instructed to report to Abuja.

Her ordeal continued upon her arrival in Abuja on 20th November 2025, where, according to Temokun, she faced “endless waiting, delays, and frustration” at the FID headquarters.
“The IPO in custody of her phones disappeared all through Friday and was obviously unwilling to part with the phones,” he said.

The turning point came when Mr. Sowore visited FID headquarters on Monday. His presence triggered immediate action.
“All of that changed the moment Mr. Omoyele Sowore arrived today at FID Abuja,” Temokun said. “Upon hearing of the Corper’s ordeal, his intervention was immediate: the two phones and other items seized by the IPO were released without further excuses, and she was finally discharged and asked to go.”

Temokun expressed deep appreciation to Sowore, saying:
“We sincerely appreciate your solidarity, courage, and unwavering commitment to defending ordinary citizens against abuse of power. Your presence made all the difference.”

Although Miss Ibrahim has now been released, the legal team says the matter is not over.
“The search for total remedial justice for Miss Ibrahim Mariam Titilayo still continues,” Temokun concluded.
