TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT, DELTA STATE CHAPTER CONDEMNS EXTRA-JUDICIAL KILLING OF OGIDI MENA IN UVWIE
The Take It Back Movement, Delta State Chapter, strongly condemns the gruesome and extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Ogidi Mena, allegedly carried out by ASP Nuhu Usman, popularly known as Ogbegbe, in Uvwie, Delta State.
This disturbing incident, which occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Effurun Main Park along Sapele Road and subsequently at the Ekpan Police Station, is yet another painful reminder of the unchecked brutality and lawlessness that continues to plague the Nigeria Police Force.
According to credible accounts, the victim, Ogidi Mena, had gone to the park to collect a waybill on behalf of a friend. Upon opening the package under pressure from motor park authorities, a Beretta pistol with four live rounds of ammunition was discovered. Despite Mena’s insistence that he was unaware of the contents and his willingness to cooperate and lead authorities to the sender, he was restrained and handed over to the police.
Rather than follow due process, ASP Ogbegbe, in a display of recklessness and abuse of power, allegedly shot the victim in the hand at the park. Mena was thereafter transported to the Ekpan police station alive. Shockingly, upon arrival at the station, ASP Ogbegbe reportedly shot the victim multiple times again, killing him in cold blood without any attempt at investigation or extraction of information.
We commend ACP Aliyu Shaba for his swift intervention in disarming and detaining the officer involved, as well as initiating steps to escalate the matter to higher authorities. However, this alone is not sufficient.
The Take It Back Movement demands a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into this heinous act. We reject any attempt to sweep this matter under the carpet or reduce it to mere internal disciplinary proceedings. This is not a case of misconduct; it is a clear case of murder.
We also call for a full probe into the circumstances surrounding this incident. Why was the victim killed before he could provide useful information? What was the urgency to silence him? These are critical questions that must be answered. There is a strong suspicion that this act may be linked to deeper, undisclosed issues that must be uncovered.
Furthermore, the leadership of the Effurun Motor Park must come forward to provide a detailed account of the events that transpired under their watch, particularly regarding the initial handling and restraint of the victim.
The right to life is fundamental and non-negotiable. No individual, regardless of suspicion or allegation, should be denied due process under the law. The act of collecting a package, even one later found to contain a weapon, does not justify summary execution.
We call on the Delta State Government, the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector General of Police to ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done. ASP Ogbegbe and all officers involved must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The Take It Back Movement will continue to monitor this case closely and will not hesitate to mobilize lawful actions to demand justice for Ogidi Mena.
Justice must be served. Impunity must end.
Signed:
Comrade Ochuko Etu
Coordinator, Take It Back Movement
Delta State Chapter
