Take It Back Movement Jigawa State Chapter Announces Release of Detained Activist Abba Mu’azu Abiyos Who Exposed Wheelbarrow ‘Empowerment’ Scheme

The Take It Back Movement (TIB), Jigawa State Chapter, has confirmed the release of young activist and scholar, Abba Mu’azu Abiyos, who was granted bail today following his detention in Dutse, Jigawa State.

According to a statement issued by Engr. Sani Aminu Taura, Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Jigawa State Chapter on Monday, he confirmed that although bail has been formally approved however the representative from the local government chairman has yet to arrive to officially facilitate the withdrawal of the case, leaving some administrative steps pending.

Abiyos, described by the movement as “a young and intelligent leader,” is widely known for his commitment to civic activism and academic excellence.

He holds a B.Sc. Ed. from Bayero University, Kano (BUK) and is currently enrolled in a Master’s degree programme, with examinations scheduled for today, Monday, 17 November 2025.

The Take It Back Movement noted that his release represents a significant step in the ongoing push for justice, human rights protection, and the safeguarding of civic freedom in Nigeria.

In the statement, Aminu commended the authorities for making the right decision and urged all stakeholders to work toward ending arbitrary arrests across the country.

In its statement, the Jigawa TIB Chapter praised Abiyos for demonstrating “courage, resilience, and dedication in the face of adversity,” adding that his unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and citizens’ rights continues to inspire many within and beyond the activist community.

The movement called for continued vigilance and support for individuals who stand for truth and justice, emphasising that a better society can only be achieved when every citizen’s voice is respected and protected.

Abiyos was arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, following a Facebook post in which he criticized the Chairman of Roni Local Government Area, Abba Ya’u, for “empowering” youths with wheelbarrows.

He was subsequently charged with cyberbullying and defamation. As of November 17, 2025, he has been remanded in prison custody in Dutse, with his trial set to commence on November 24.

Human rights groups including the Take It Back Movement, Amnesty International, and the Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, have condemned his arrest, describing it as an abuse of power and a violation of his fundamental rights, with Take It Back Movement closely monitoring the situation.
