The sad reality is that not all hospitals in Nigeria can treat emergency cases because of the lack of necessary vital drugs, equipment, qualified very professional medical personnel including doctors, nurses and diagnostic staff among others. So rejecting patients with emergency cases is a way of avoiding trouble and not exposing their inadequacy.
The moment an unqualified hospital accepts an emergency patient, the onus rests on the medical personnel to see to the wellness or stability of the patient which in most cases is impossible, and the patient dies. When this happens, some families of the dead become violent, recalcitrant, stubbornly refused to pay the balance of medical bills. The family that had hitherto taken their sick person to church fake miracle centres, fake and sweet talking alfa and over prized babalawo for weeks or months will not blame themselves for causing the deteriorating health of their loved one, but blame the hospital even if it’s the best teaching hospital around.
Before you are sick, take time out to the hospitals in your area, the 3-bed room or duplex hospital, there you will discover that most hospitals in your neighborhood are not qualified to treat serious emergency cases. And most general hospitals are only general in name not in treatment. Many of the teaching hospitals too are mere images of their glorious past. In all ways, we are in heath danger due to the highlighted factors and mass poverty caused especially by the government.
