Take It Back Movement National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu Released from Police, DSS Custody

The National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, has regained his freedom from police custody.

Sanyaolu was released from the Ikeja headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command on Thursday night.

The news of Juwon’s release was made known by Ayoyinka Oni, a member of the TIB’s Lagos chapter.

In the video shared by Ayoyinka Oni, the TIB Lagos chapter member, Juwon Sanyaolu was seen emerging from the police station alongside Oni, as they chanted the rousing refrain “Solidarity forever!” The scene was a powerful demonstration of the enduring strength and unity of Nigeria’s resistance movement, as Sanyaolu—briefly silenced by the state—once again stood side by side with his fellow activists in the struggle for a better future.

Previous reports brought to light the involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the arrest and subsequent transfer of  Juwon Sanyaolu to the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.

In an attempt to deflect blame, the DSS took to their social media platform (formerly Twitter) to deny any involvement in the abduction of Juwon Sanyaolu.

The DSS post had read: “Juwon Sanyaolu, Coordinator of TAKE IT BACK MOVEMENT is NOT with the DSS. He was NOT invited, arrested or detained by the Service.”

Juwon Sanyaolu was forcibly abducted by security agents on Tuesday night, moments before the planned June 12 protest against President Tinubu’s Neoliberal policies. The shadowy act, which took place at precisely 10:05pm, is carried out in response to Sanyaolu’s role in organizing the #June12, #WeAreHungry Protest.
