An international human rights organization, Amnesty International, has added its voice to the growing calls for justice in the horrific case of a Bauchi resident, identified as Yunusa from Nasaru village, Ningi Local Government Area, who was brutally murdered by a mob for alleged blasphemy.
Yunusa, a resident of Nasaru village in Bauchi State, was brutally murdered by an enraged mob over allegations of making blasphemous remarks against the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
Reports indicate that Yunusa was accused of insulting the prophet, resulting in a furious mob taking matters into their own hands, meting out a brutal form of vigilante justice that ended in the victim’s tragic death
Yunusa’s fate took a devastating turn as the furious mob reportedly overwhelmed police personnel and proceeded to unleash a brutal and lethal assault on the victim, utilizing stones, sticks, and other objects as weapons, the enraged mob overpowered the outnumbered police officers, leaving Yunusa vulnerable to a vicious onslaught that tragically ended his life.
Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International condemned the tragic killing of Yunusa as a horrific and inexcusable act of violence, demanding an urgent and thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to his death.
Expressing dismay at the heinous crime, Amnesty International urged the Nigerian government to take swift and decisive action to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for Yunusa’s murder. The organization emphasized that failure to hold the perpetrators accountable would only serve to embolden religious extremists and further endanger the lives and freedoms of citizens.
Amnesty said, “The incident which took place on Wednesday involved the use of stones, sticks, and iron until Yunusa had his last breath.
“By failing again and again to ensure that those suspected of responsibility for killings over alleged blasphemy are brought to justice, the Nigerian authorities continue to create a permissive environment for such atrocities.
“Nigerian authorities must immediately and effectively investigate this horrifying incident and ensure that those suspected of being responsible are brought justice.
“The authorities need no more evidence to see how dangerous accusations of blasphemy are.”
In recent years, Northern Nigeria has witnessed an alarming spate of violent attacks and killings, perpetrated by religious extremists, targeting individuals, often young Nigerians, accused of making blasphemous statements against the Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The perpetrators, driven by a zealous devotion to their faith, have resorted to vigilantism, meting out brutal forms of punishment and even extrajudicial killings, in stark defiance of the rule of law and the fundamental human rights to life and freedom of expression. These chilling incidents point to a growing culture of intolerance and extremism that threatens to further divide the country along religious lines and undermine efforts towards national cohesion and stability.
