Human Rights Activist Omoyele Sowore has rebuked the Labour Party’s retreat from supporting the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, stating that the people’s unyielding resolve to bring about change cannot be deterred by the party’s cowardice.
This is following the release of a statement tagged “Obi, Labour Party Not Involved in ‘EndBadGovernance’ Protest’” by the Labour Party on Saturday distancing themselves and their presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest.
The statement reads in part, “The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to a tweet purportedly from one of the presidential aides, Mr. Bayo Onanuga linking the Labour Party, its national leader Peter Obi, and very many notable figures in our party to the proposed ‘EndBadGovernance’ protest. We say that there is no truth in that and the tweet is just the author’s figment of his imagination.”
In response to the Labour Party’s statement, Omoyele Sowore highlighted that the inclusion of the Labour party and Peter Obi’s name in the statements from presidential aides and the ruling party was a deliberate strategy to exploit his perceived vulnerability. Sowore emphasized that the aides recognized Obi’s weakness and willingness to sacrifice the people’s movement due to fear of repercussions.
He wrote, “Of Course, they mentioned your names because they know you’re all wimps and turncoats. And that out of fear of reprisal, you would help them demobilize the public. That’s too late NOW!”
Sowore’s words, “That’s too late NOW!” indicate that the people are already committed to the cause and will not be deterred by the party’s attempt to distance itself.”
Earlier, Sowore had unveiled a list of 15 critical demands from Nigerians as part of the upcoming ‘Days of Rage’ protest.
The protest, tagged #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, aims to address the country’s governance challenges.
According to Sowore, the demands were compiled from inputs received from Nigerians participating in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria campaign.
The demands are directed at President Bola Tinubu’s administration and are considered non-negotiable by the protesters.
The ‘Days of Rage’ protests, scheduled for late July to August 2024, have been preceded by the demands published by Sowore on his X account.
