Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has alleged that many of the individuals occupying positions of power and authority in the country are among the worst of its citizens.
In a post on his X on Saturday, Effiong emphasized that the depth of the country’s dysfunction and the pervasiveness of unethical behaviors in politics are deeply concerning, calling for a fundamental restructuring of the political system to rectify these issues. The lawyer’s statement underscores the urgency of the situation, suggesting that without drastic action to address these systemic issues, the country will continue to face significant obstacles in its path towards progress and stability.
He said: “The rot is so deeply entrenched, something has to happen that’ll shake this country to its very foundation and lead to a complete reset.
“We have the worst of us occupying political positions. People whose agenda and preoccupation are to kill, steal and destroy. There has to be a fundamental change.”
Recent reports have indicated that a nationwide protest is being planned for the period of August 1 to August 10, 2024, as many Nigerians grow increasingly frustrated with the state of the country. The planned demonstrations, which have garnered widespread support and attention, reflect the mounting discontent among citizens regarding the persistent issues of corruption, economic inequality, and political instability that have plagued Nigeria for decades.
As the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on citizens across the country, the protesters have adopted the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria slogan to highlight the role of ineffective leadership in exacerbating these issues and to call for urgent action to address the crisis. With growing discontent among Nigerians, the protests aim to catalyze meaningful change and bring about a more equitable and sustainable future for the country.
