The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has expressed grave concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s increasingly authoritarian tendencies, citing recent arrests of protest organizers and human rights activists as indicative of a broader pattern of repression and intimidation.
The group also raised concern over the growing trend of security agencies being employed to stifle dissent and called on the Nigerian government to respect the rule of law, uphold the rights of citizens, and foster an atmosphere that encourages dialogue and civic engagement.
RULAAC warned that these actions reflect a dangerous shift towards democratic backsliding, raising alarms about the erosion of fundamental freedoms and human rights in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma, said such actions undermine democratic principles, stifle free expression, and limit the ability of citizens to voice their concerns.
He said, “It is critical for a healthy democracy that individuals and organizations can operate freely without fear of harassment or repression.”
RULAAC, however, called on the Tinubu government to prioritise upholding democratic principles by ensuring the protection of civil liberties and constitutional rights.
“This includes safeguarding freedom of speech, assembly, and the press, as well as promoting transparency, accountability, and rule of law,” he said.
Nwanguma added that by doing so, the government can strengthen democratic institutions, build public trust, and encourage civic engagement, which are essential for a thriving democracy.
