Minors Arrested During Kano #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Protests Released on Bail

Several minors detained during the recent #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in Kano State have been granted bail.

According to reports, the young persons were released following the intervention of a civic organisation, Advocate for Justice Alliance, led by Barrister AK Musa.

These young protesters, who took to the streets to express their dissatisfaction with the government, were arraigned before multiple magistrates and faced legal repercussions for exercising their democratic rights.

Barrister AK Musa confirmed to SaharaReporters that 40 minors arrested during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in Kano State have been granted bail. However, he noted that none of the adult protesters has received bail at this time.

“40 minors granted bail from Kano prison. No adult was granted bail,” he said.

“Matter is to continue on the 11th of September 2024. My organisation is working with the legal aid in Kano to secure the release and representation of more persons.”

Earlier this month, in response to Nigeria’s escalating economic crisis, hundreds of Nigerian youths took to the streets in a 10-day movement dubbed the #EndBadGovernance protest, or ’10 Days of Rage.’

The nationwide demonstration, held from August 1st to 10th, highlighted pressing issues such as inflation, insecurity, and poor governance, with protesters presenting a list of ultimatums to be addressed by the government.

On August 7, during the protest, Amnesty International, a global human rights organisation, announced over 1000 Nigerians who participated in the protest against worsening hunger and misgovernance were currently being held in prison custody across the country.

The organisation criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu for responding to the protests with a crackdown, rather than addressing the economic issues that are exacerbating hunger and harming families.

According to Amnesty International then, at least 632 protesters were held in Kano State, while over 109 are being detained in Sokoto prison custody.
