Sowore Points to Lack of Consequences for Abusive Police

Human rights activist and the convener of the Revolutionnow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has drawn attention to the persistent lack of consequences for abusive police officers in the country.

This follows the Nigerian police force’s violent response to peaceful protesters at the EndSarsMemorial4 event, which took place on Sunday at the Lekki tollgate.

The protesters had gathered to honor the victims of police brutality and call for an end to such injustices. However, they were met with brute force, as police officers resorted to using tear gas, physical assault, and arrests to disperse the crowd.

Sharing a video of one of his encounter with the Nigerian police force on his X handle, Sowore shed light on the lack of accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.

He stated that the then-ACP Bernard Igwe, has since been promoted despite involvement in suppressing peaceful protests. The activist argues that well-known police officers engaging in impunity continue to be rewarded rather than punished, perpetuating a culture of unchecked police brutality and repression.

“The reason impunity by Nigeria Police Forcewill never end because well-known police officers engaging in impunity are never punished. This was our encounter with then-ACP Bernard Igwe of the @FCT_PoliceNG during one of our #EndSARSMemorial in Abuja.”, he wrote.

Sowore further noted that Igwe’s career advanced even after his involvement in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria repressions from August 1st to 10th, 2024.

“Igwe became CP of FCT police and was involved in the August 1-10, 2024 #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria repressions.

“Still, it didn’t take long for him to be rewarded with the position of AIG “Zone 7” with the help of Nyesom Wike.”, Sowore further disclosed.
