Muhammed M. Liman suffered a life-altering spinal cord injury as a direct result of police brutality during the #EndBadGovernance protests, according to Amnesty International.
The human rights organization is now demanding justice for Liman and others who have been victims of excessive force by the authorities.
Liman, a worker at A.A. Kime filling station in Maiduguri, Borno State, sustained life-threatening injuries during the violent suppression of the #EndBadGovernance protests.
According to Amnesty International, “On that fateful day, as Liman and his colleagues were working at the station, a convoy of security personnel threw hand grenades at them in an attempt to quell the protests.
“The attack resulted in the deaths of three of Liman’s friends, while Liman himself was left severely wounded.”
Amnesty International has strongly criticized the absence of an investigation into the tragic deaths of these three individuals, as well as the government’s dissemination of a deceptive narrative aimed at concealing the truth.
The case of Muhammed M. Liman, who is in critical condition with worsening injuries, underscores the urgent need for justice. Despite the severity of the situation, the authorities have failed to take appropriate measures to address the violence perpetrated against Liman and others during the incident.
“The Nigerian authorities must impartially investigate all incidents of violent crackdown on #EndBadGovernance protesters between 1–10 August,” the statement added.
“Killing, severely injuring and detaining people peacefully demanding good governance and accountability is unlawful.”
Amnesty International called on the government to take immediate action to rectify the situation and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. The human rights organization emphasized the need for a swift and thorough response to address the injustices that have occurred and to prevent further violations.
