#FreeOlamide: Court Rules in Favor of Activist Abiodun Thomas in Fundamental Rights Case

The Federal High Court in Abuja delivered a ruling on the fundamental rights case of activist Abiodun Thomas, who was arrested and detained on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The suit, numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/1892/V/2024, was between Thomas Abiodun (the applicant) and the IGP and two others (the respondents).

During the hearing, S. M. Oyeghe represented the applicant, arguing that the arrest of Thomas’ uncle in her place violated the Police Act and that the detention limit of 24 to 48 hours had been exceeded, constituting a violation of the Constitution. The court ultimately sided with the applicant, issuing an order for the respondents to arraign Thomas within 48 hours or release her unconditionally. The case has been adjourned to January 6, 2025, for further proceedings.

This ruling comes amidst growing concerns over the treatment of activists and critics in Nigeria, with many decrying the government’s apparent efforts to stifle dissent and suppress freedom of expression.
