Human rights activist and the convener of the RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the stringent bail conditions imposed on Nurse Olamide following a court ruling in Abuja.
Sowore, a long-time advocate for human rights and justice, expressed his continued support for the fight against the abuse of power and misconduct within the Nigeria Police Force.
He also criticized the court’s decision to impose oppressive bail conditions on Nurse Olamide, calling for a more just and fair legal process. He argued that the excessive conditions highlight the systemic issues within Nigeria’s judicial system and the need for urgent reform.
Sowore emphasized the importance of addressing the larger issues at hand. He called for continued efforts to challenge the Nigeria Police Force leadership’s incompetence and complicity in perpetuating human rights violations.
Taking to his X handle, he wrote, “Nurse OLAMIDE has been granted bail this morning in Abuja, though bail conditions were stringent and unduly oppressive; we will keep fighting Nigeria’s Police Force @PoliceNG and its incompetent and compromised leaders for their abuse and irresponsible conduct. #FreeOlamideNow”
Reports had earlier revealed that the federal high court in Abuja had granted bail to Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the female activist accused of threatening Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, on social media.
In the case numbered, FHC/ABJ/CR/636/2024: Thomas Abiodun Olamide v. IGP & 2 ORS, the defendant, represented by Dr. S. M. Oyeghe, Esq, and J. A Ekwe, Esq., appeared in court for a ruling on the motion for bail. Despite the absence of the prosecution, the defendant’s motion for bail and the complainant’s counter affidavit were adopted and argued.
In his ruling, the judge cited a lack of concrete evidence that the defendant would jump bail if granted. The court subsequently granted bail with the following conditions: a 10 million naira bond, one surety in like sum, the surety’s deposition of an affidavit of means, presentation of a three-year tax clearance certificate, residency within the court’s jurisdiction, and the submission of two recent passport photographs for both the surety and defendant. Additionally, the surety’s address will be verified.
The case was then adjourned to February 18, 2025, for trial.
