“When Will the Economy Improve?” – Netufo Tomide Slams Nigerian Government’s Empty Promises

Netufo Tomide, a human rights activist, has expressed frustration over the state of the economy and the promises of improvement made by the Nigerian government.

In a social media post, Tomide questioned when the economy would actually improve and criticized politicians for their failures, highlighting the severity of hunger faced by many in the country.

“Everyday they tell us economy will pick up? The question is when??

“The hunger on the streets of this country is unbearable. Failed politicians everywhere.”, he wrote.

Nigeria’s inflation rate has continued its upward trend forcing more citizens into hardship amid the many promises of the current President Bola Tinubu-led government.

As at last month December, the country’s inflation rate stood at 34.6%, up from the 33.88% recorded in October, 2024.

It is higher than the 32.15% recorded in August 2024, and  33.40% recorded in July 2024.

It is also higher than the 34.19% recorded in June and 33.95% recorded in May.

This development is despite many promises of the Tinubu-led government to reduce the inflation rate in the country.

In July 2024, the Tinubu administration promised to tackle food inflation and reduce cost of living for the citizens of the country.

Vice President, Kashim Shettima had emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling the rising inflation in the country.

During the celebration of Nigeria’s Independence on October 1, the Tinubu-led administration restated its commitment to tackling the rising inflation in the country.

The CBN also recently increased the MPR to 27.5% citing need to curb inflation in the country. However, all the moves have failed to translate to reduction in the inflation rate of the country.

It also comes amid end of the year celebrations like Christmas amid other festivities.
