Released activist Michael Adaramoye, also known as Michael Lenin, who was targeted by the Department of State Services (DSS) for his role in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, has strongly denounced the Nigerian Police Force’s (NPF) response to Amnesty International’s report on the protest.
Adaramoye called the NPF’s actions “shamelessness and cruelty” in light of the report’s findings, which included excessive force used against peaceful protesters, resulting in the death of at least 24 people.
Reacting to NPF’s response, Lenin wrote, “This is the peak of shamelessness by the Nigeria Police Force and Adejobi Olumuyiwa . Thousands of Nigerians took part in the #EndBadGovernance protest, we saw the conducts of the police officers, we saw how protesters were attacked by police officers, many of us were lucky to have survived. We saw how innocent Nigerians were incarcerated for months, including minors. We believe the reports by Amnesty International because it reflects the agonizing reality of #EndBadGovernance protest and the cruelty of the NPF.
You easily make Nigerians to believe that lies, shamelessness, cruelty and inhumanity are criteria for growth within the NPF. Shameless!”
Earlier, the Take It Back Movement had also condemned the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for demanding that Amnesty International retract its publication on the violent crackdown.
Contrary to the NPF’s claims, there is ample evidence and testimony corroborating Amnesty International’s findings, the group said in a statement.
It commended the courage of those who have shared their experiences of unjust treatment by law enforcement officers during the protests.
On Tuesday, TIB issued a statement signed by Sanyaolu Juwon, TIB National Coordinator, and Stephen Olabiyi, the organisation’s Public Relations Officer, stating that “the NPF’s retaliatory move undermines democracy and freedom of expression.”
The group stressed that suppressing the truth only further erodes public trust in institutions meant to protect and serve the people.
The Take It Back Movement called for the NPF to focus on investigating these allegations and improving police conduct during public demonstrations, reaffirming its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian citizens.
