Social justice activist and student Ayodele Aduwo has strongly condemned the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU) leadership and Student Representative Council (UI’SRC) members for their failure to address the ongoing electricity crisis at the University College Hospital (UCH).
In a statement posted on his social media account on Monday, Aduwo expressed deep shame and disappointment in the university management’s failure to resolve the ongoing electricity crisis at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
“80 Days of Darkness. Shame to the UI’SU leadership. Shame to all UI’SRC members who grinned at the UCH electricity crisis when it was raised at the last sitting. Shame to the gross failure of the University management over this protracted crisis. Shame!”, he wrote.
The crisis, which has left students and staff without power for over 80 days, has become a source of frustration and concern for the university community.
Some weeks ago, patients at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan staged a protest on following the ongoing power cuts at the facility.
In the video, the demonstrators said there has not been water and electricity in the hospital for many days.
The protesters expressed concern that the lack of essential services has contributed to patient deaths.
Also, the lack of electricity has not only delayed routine test results but also posed risks for patients in critical condition.
Medical experts have voiced concerns about how prolonged outages could lead to compromised hygiene standards, medication storage issues, and the overall quality of patient care at UCH, one of Nigeria’s foremost hospitals.
Additionally, water supply has been affected, compounding the challenges for both staff and patients in maintaining basic sanitary conditions.
