The Misplaced Priorities of the Nigerian Police, Written by Comrade Ufezime Nelson Ubi

The Nigerian police force, once tasked with the noble responsibility of maintaining law and order, has sadly become an institution synonymous with misplaced priorities and abuse of power. Rather than focusing on tackling the pressing issues that plague our country—such as rampant criminality, terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, and corruption—the police are busy attempting to intimidate Omoyele Sowore, a fearless activist and journalist who has dedicated his life to exposing the truth and holding the powerful accountable.

Omoyele Sowore’s work, especially his advocacy for transparency and justice, has uncovered numerous instances of corruption and misgovernance within the corridors of power. Instead of addressing these exposures and taking corrective measures, the Nigerian police, like puppets of the state, have chosen to harass and suppress him. This brazen attempt to silence a voice that represents millions of oppressed Nigeria is a testament to the moral and institutional decay within the force.

The actions of the Nigerian police demonstrate an unwillingness to focus on the real problems plaguing our nation. Insecurity remains at an all-time high, with criminals and kidnappers wreaking havoc across the country. Citizens live in constant fear as these threats grow unchecked, yet the police divert their energy towards targeting individuals like Sowore, who is simply exercising his constitutional right to free speech and demanding accountability.

This behavior is not just foolish but counterproductive. Every attempt to intimidate or silence Sowore only further exposes the rot within the system. It highlights the cowardice of a police force that would rather protect the corrupt and attack those who fight for justice than do the hard work of making Nigeria safer and more just for everyone.

The Nigerian police must understand that their duty is to the people, not the ruling elite or corrupt officials. Their failure to prioritize the security and well-being of citizens while wasting resources on oppressing activists reflects a system that is out of touch with its purpose. The world is watching, and history will not judge them kindly.

It is high time the Nigerian police redirected their efforts toward addressing the root causes of insecurity, enforcing the law impartially, and holding those responsible for corruption accountable. Nigeria cannot afford to continue down this path of repression and negligence. The people are awake, and the days of using intimidation to suppress the truth are numbered.

Omoyele Sowore represents the hope of a better Nigeria—a nation where truth, justice, and accountability prevail. The Nigerian police must decide whether they want to be on the right side of history or remain agents of a failing system. Their current trajectory only serves to deepen public mistrust and reinforce the need for systemic reform.

The fight for a better Nigeria cannot be stopped, no matter how much the forces of oppression try. As Nigerians, we must continue to stand with those who speak truth to power and demand that the police focus on their true mandate—protecting lives, fighting crime, and ensuring justice for all. The time for change is now.
