
The Take It Back Movement student wing has expressed outrage over the unjust expulsion of 37 Nasarawa State University students for their alleged involvement in organizing a protest via a WhatsApp group.
The students were accused of “criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, and cyber-stalking” following their participation in a chat group intended to mobilize demonstrations against the university’s decision to introduce a third semester.
The students were subsequently summoned to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
The University authorities stated that their rustication were approved by the Senate at its 123rd Regular Meeting held on Thursday, 31 October, 2024, where they considered and approved the recommendation of the Committee that they should be rusticated from the University for one academic session, 2024/2025.
The affected students were warned to keep away from the university premises unless authorised in writing, adding that they are to resume for full academic programme in the First Semester of 2025/2026 Academic Session with your parent/guardian and a letter of undertaking promising to be of good behaviour throughout their studentship in the University.
In response to the expulsion, the Take It Back Movement student wing, led by Oguntola Sunday, condemned the injustice and demanded immediate reinstatement of the affected students.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the students’ coordinator, Oguntola Sunday, the Take It Back Movement student wing denounced the Nasarawa State University’s infringement of free speech and assembly rights.
They emphasized the need for accountability and an end to systemic oppression in Nigeria’s educational institutions.
The statement read in part, “We, the Take It Back Movement Student Wing, unequivocally condemn the unjust expulsion of 37 students from Nasarawa State University for forming a WhatsApp group to organize protests.
“This blatant violation of their right to free speech and assembly is yet another example of the systemic oppression that plagues our educational institutions.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected students and call for their immediate reinstatement.
“Furthermore, we demand that the university administration respect students’ rights to express their opinions and engage in peaceful protests without fear of retribution.
“As we continue to fight for a more just and equitable society, we must remain vigilant in holding our educational institutions accountable for their actions.
“The future of Nigeria depends on the ability of its youth to engage in critical thinking and peaceful activism, and we will not allow their voices to be silenced.”
