Cybercrime: The Growing Menace and the Need for Vigilance, Written by Ogundipe Daniel

As a human rights activist, i’m compelled to speak out against the rising tide of cybercrime that has been plaguing our society. The recent surge in cybercrime cases has led to the arrest and prosecution of several individuals, highlighting the need for increased awareness and vigilance.

In recent times, we have seen the likes of Dele Farotimi, Abiodun Thomas, and Abraham Daniel face the law for their alleged involvement in cybercrime. The list also includes Seaking, Omoyele Sowore, Peter Enenche Enenche, Alexander Enenche, and Destiny Ekhurutomwem, who have all been embroiled in cybercrime-related cases.

These cases serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of cybercrime and the importance of protecting ourselves and our communities from its devastating effects. Cybercrime can take many but has been use for kidnapping and sentencing citizens in Nigeria.

As a Nigerans, we must recognize the severity of this issue and take collective action to prevent it.

However, it is alarming to note that the Nigerian system and the Nigeria Police Force have allegedly turned the Cybercrime law into a tool for extortion and exploitation as bail condition is been used to hike mare citizens. This is unacceptable and undermines the very purpose of the law.

The Cybercrime law is expected to be a law to protect Nigerians from the dangers of cybercrime, not to provide a means for corrupt law enforcement officials to enrich their pockets. It is very urgent that we address this issue and ensure that the law is enforced in a fair and just manner.

As a human rights activist, I am committed to advocating for the rights and safety of all individuals in the digital space as social media have become the only channel and means to exercise of freedom of speech.
I urge everyone to join me in this fight against this cybercrime and corruption.

We shouldn’t wait until we become victims of this cybercrime or corruption before taking action. The consequences of inaction can be severe, ranging from financial loss to reputational damage.
This is to call us all Nigerans to work together to prevent cybercrime, combat corruption, and protect our digital rights. We owe it to ourselves, our communities, and future generations to create a safer and more secure online world.

I dare call all us Nigerians to work together to raise awareness and promote action against these growing menaces.

Together, we can make a difference.
