Prominent human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has accused the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and the Nigerian Police Force of orchestrating the arrest and ongoing detention of popular TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo, also known as Seaking.
According to Sowore, the recent actions against Seaking are an attempt to silence criticism of the RCCG and its influential leader, Pastor E.A. Adeboye.
Taking to his social media handle on Saturday night, Sowore wrote, “The Nigeria Police Force under illegal and mediocre Kayode Egbetokun is unhinged; what most don’t know is that Egbetokun and his family members are “redeemers,” an aphorism used to describe Redeem Church members, so make no mistake about it RCCG National Headquarters Parishordained the war against popular TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo @seaking303 forget about what PASTOR E. A. ADEBOYE is telling the public.”
Sowore further asserts that the Redeemers’ influence within the police force, exemplified by the protection provided to Kayode Egbetokun’s wife during the annual Holy Ghost congress, demonstrates the urgent need to separate religious entities from the Nigerian state, “The Nigeria Police Force under illegal and mediocre Kayode Egbetokun is unhinged; what most don’t know is that Egbetokun and his family members are “redeemers,” an aphorism used to describe Redeem Church members, so make no mistake about it RCCG National Headquarters Parishordained the war against popular TikToker Olumide Ogunsanwo @seaking303 forget about what PASTOR E. A. ADEBOYE is telling the public.”
“Last year, during the annual Holy Ghost congress, over 100 police officers guarded Egbetokun’s wife alone; it is the reason these dissemblers don’t rate Nigerians. Since yesterday,
@seaking303’s detention location has been changed, and his whereabouts are unknown.”
As the whereabouts of Seaking remain unknown following his forced transfer from Lagos to Abuja, Sowore calls for a revolution, asserting that the country has reached a breaking point, “We must fight to separate religious entities from the Nigerian state. But beyond that, this country is overripe for a revolution.”, he added.
The situation highlights the complex relationship between religious institutions, state authorities, and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
On February 7, Sowore had also expressed his disappointment and concern over the decline of the Nigeria Police Force, describing it as “disheartening, disgusting, and frightening.”
The statement comes after Sowore’s meeting with Olumide (Seaking) in Abuja.
Sowore’s team, including lawyers Adeyanju Deji and Marshal D F Abubakar, met with the Federal Investigation Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force to discuss Olumide’s ordeal.
They were informed that Olumide’s arrest was due to alleged cyberbullying against Pastor E.A. Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) according to Sowore on his X handle.
The police had claimed that a petition was submitted by Paul James Adama, representing a Christian association, on behalf of Pastor Adeboye.
However, Sowore questioned how a TikTok video could be considered bullying or threats to someone as prominent and protected as Pastor Adeboye.
The Nigerian Police Force faces numerous challenges, including institutional, structural, and operational issues.
The challenges have contributed to the decline of the police force and the erosion of trust between law enforcement and the public.
Sowore’s concerns highlight the need for reform and accountability within the Nigerian Police Force.
In the post, Sowore had stated: “We just departed the DIG Dasuki Galandanchi led Federal Investigation Department (FID) of the Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG, where we met Olumide Ogunsanwo aka @seaking303, he was in the company of police officers who had travelled to Lagos to kidnap him. @adeyanjudeji Deji and Marshal D F Abubakar were present as lawyers representing @seaking303 and standing in for @InibeheEffiong!
“To our surprise, they disclosed that Olumide’s recent ordeal resulted from alleged cyberbullying against Pastor E.A. Adeboye, @PastorEAAdeboye the General Overseer of the @rccghq Redeemed Christian Church of God, in a TikTok session @seaking303 did in December of 2024.”
