UNIZIK must have suffered from what I described as Agravated Contagious Mob Instinct by expelling the rude female student who assaulted a lecturer. It’s simply an overkill courtesy of social media mob of genuine and duplicitous moralists.
Rightfully, most of us condemned the excessive assault response of the young lady, but I dare say that suspension for at least an academic session is sufficient enough not expulsion. Expulsion in a university is equivalent to Capital Punishment, and capital punishment should be for capital offences . In the university system, I think capital punishment should be for offences like rape, murder, arson, violent cultism, armed robbery, abduction, etc. But definitely it shouldn’t be for assault. No please, I disagree. .
If our prisons are now called “Correctional Centre”, I strongly feel, our university system should be a super Correctional Centre of Excellence in moral, character and integrity development. Sadly, UNIZIK danced to the gallery of the social media court of public opinions.
I asked myself, would the expulsion punishment be the same if the rude student had assaulted a non academic staff, his fellow student, “Iya oni moin moon”, “Iya, e Karo, Se e o fo Aso o” washwoman, or a bukateria operator in the university? I don’t think so and I won’t support that too.
Then, I asked myself, will the assaulted lecturer pop champagne to celebrate after hearing the news of the lady’s expulsion? I don’t think so with the mien of a gentleman I saw on the screen struggling to collect the phone from the lady to effect the deletion of his image he suspected was in the tiktok video of the lady.
Then, I also asked myself, would the assaulted lecturer touch a lady again or even a male student to give way next time he finds himself in such a situation again, a situation that started the whole sad event? I don’t think so. He too must have learnt his lesson because no reasonable person would want to be on the global stage for a wrong reason. He would have preferred to be celebrated for positive reasons, his work and accomplishment.
The nasty lady deserved to be punished while the lecturer has also learned from his bitter experience which he never bargained for. But I do repeat that expelling the lady is an overkil, it’s like killing a notorious mosquito with AK-47..No please. UNIZIK authorities should have shown us that they run a disciplined institution but reformative not destructive, more so for a first rude spontaneous offender,
I was a victim of three rustication and expulsion cases at Great Ife for no justifiable reasons than being a radical principled student activist and SU president that made me spent 13 years for a 5 year course. Thanks to generations of Great Ife students, the old real NANS, our able lawyers like Alao Aka Bashorun, Femi Falana, Gani Fawehinmi, Segun Sango, Olumide Fusika, Awosode, and DSM, CLO, CDHR, CWI, and other positive forces.
I’m not saying my case is similar to the rude female student case. But the hard lesson I learned and pushed for years is that no student is worth expulsion except he/she commits university’s “capital offences” like rape, murder, robbery, arson, murder, violent cultism, abduction.
I can understand the support for expulsion by naive or spontaneous moralists in the fist of momentary anger. But for the sudden duplicitous moralists who supported and always defend rogue political leaders, corrupt leaders, drug barons, identity thieves, certificate forgers, election riggers, etc, in office, please shut up on this case. You can’t preach what you don’t have or do.
Once again, the unruly lady deserves punishment of suspension NOT Expulsion. I submit.
