Take It Back Movement, Amnesty International Holds Digital Campaign Training in Lagos

Amnesty International, a global human rights organization and the Take It Back Movement recently facilitated a digital campaign and cybersecurity training workshop in Lagos, Nigeria.

The two days training which started today, 19th of February, 2025 is holding at Dover Hotel in Ikeja. The event drew participants from various states, including Kano, Adamawa, and Rivers, with attendees representing at least 25 Nigerian states.

The two-day workshop, aimed to equip participants with essential tools and knowledge to effectively advocate for human rights, engage in digital activism, and protect themselves in the digital landscape. Drawing on the organizations extensive experience and expertise in the field, they provided valuable resources and training to support the development of a strong and well-informed network of activists and human rights defenders.

The workshop commenced with an opening address by Mr. Auwal Rafsanjani, Chairman of Amnesty Nigeria’s Board of Trustees. Rafsanjani expressed appreciation for the Take It Back Movement’s unwavering stance against human rights abuses in Nigeria. He also acknowledged Omoyele Sowore, the movement’s convener, for his resilience and dedication to Nigeria’s progress.

Encouraging attendees to continue advocating for justice, Rafsanjani reaffirmed Amnesty International’s commitment to ending human rights abuses in Nigeria.

Sanyaolu Juwon, National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, followed with his opening remarks, expressing gratitude for Amnesty International’s dedication to addressing human rights abuses in Nigeria. Juwon also acknowledged the commitment of participants who traveled from different regions of the country to attend the event.

Encouraging participants to make the most of the learning opportunity, Juwon highlighted the importance of acquiring new skills and strategies to effectively combat human rights abuses in Nigeria.

Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the Take It Back Movement, who was also present at the event, delivered a brief speech during the first day of the training. He expressed gratitude to committed comrades who have been instrumental in the movement’s growth and recounted the origins of the movement in Nigeria.

The training officially kicked off with Tella Temitayo, a social media campaign expert, sharing his expertise. Temitayo provided valuable insights into the realm of social media advocacy and community mobilization in the digital sphere. Participants had the opportunity to engage in a practical workshop that focused on the development of effective digital campaign strategies and plans.

Temitayo’s guidance and the hands-on experience allowed attendees to develop the skills necessary for creating powerful campaigns that can mobilize supporters, amplify key messages, and enact positive change through online platforms.

The first day of the training concluded with a screening of the captivating film, “Great Nigerian Students.” The documentary offers a comprehensive look at the struggles and triumphs of Nigerian students, spanning several decades from the military era of the 1970s and 1980s to the more recent events of 2015-2016.

Prominent activists, including Omoyele Sowore, Malachy Ugummmadu, Segun Maiyegun, Ene Obi, Lanre Arogundade, Owei Lakemfa, Baba Aye, Femi Adeyeye, Juwon Sanyaolu, Soweto, and renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, are featured in the film, providing insightful perspectives on the experiences of Nigerian students throughout history.
