The Take-It-Back Movement (TIB) has strongly condemned a recent brutal assault on University of Jos students by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives.
In a statement released on Tuesday, John A. Onah, the TIB Coordinator for Jos, Plateau State, described the incident as a “barbaric abuse of power and robbery” that exposes corruption within the NSCDC.
According to witnesses, the armed officers banged on the students’ doors without explanation and proceeded to use tear gas and physical violence. The operatives also allegedly stole laptops, phones, and money from the students.
TIB has called for the immediate identification and prosecution of the officers involved, compensation for the affected students, and measures to end the “reign of terror” against students and citizens.
The movement has also threatened to organize a mass action at the NSCDC State Command Office in Jos if their demands are not met.
The statement partly read: “In a shocking and reprehensible display of lawlessness, men of the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) brutally attacked students of the University of Jos at 9 pm.
“These oppressors in uniform did not only used tear gas on the students, they assaulted the students brutally and stole their laptops, phones and money. This state-enabled robbery and assault further exposes the rampant corruption and lawlessness festering within the security apparatus, where those meant to protect have become the oppressors.”
It added, “Immediate identification and prosecution of the officers who came to perpetrate the crimes. Full compensation for all affected students and concrete measures to end this reign of terror against students and citizens.”
The incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of NSCDC operatives and the need for accountability within the corps.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has a mandate to provide security and protect citizens, but this incident suggests a gross abuse of power and trust.
