The Lagos State chapter of the Take It Back Movement has intervened in the case of a father and son who were unlawfully detained by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Iba, Lagos, over a bail demand of two million naira.
In a written statement by the coordinator of the movement in Lagos, he revealed that the incident came to light after the convener of the movement, Omoyele Sowore, contacted him on Wednesday morning to step into the matter.
“We have thousands of people languishing in prison for an offense they didn’t commit and because they were unable to buy their way out of the police station, they end up in prison,” the coordinator stated, highlighting the systemic rot in the country’s law enforcement process.
He disclosed that he immediately acted upon receiving the directive. “I reached out to the contact person, got the information and called the DPO, who referred me to the IPO in charge of the case. To save her face, the DPO sent the IPO’s number while I put a call across,” he narrated.
According to him, after sustained engagement, both the father and son were eventually released after spending three days in detention.
“To cut the long story short, both the father and son were released after being held in captivity for 3 days,” he confirmed.
The Take It Back Movement has been at the forefront of social justice advocacy and continues to challenge police brutality and unlawful detention across the country.
