Amnesty International has issued a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s regime, accusing it of failing to protect the lives of Nigerians amid a surge in deadly attacks and growing insecurity across the country.

In a statement titled “President Tinubu is Failing to Protect Lives,” Amnesty International called on the Nigerian leader to urgently prioritize the safety of citizens and address the escalating violence that is leaving communities increasingly vulnerable and fearful.
The human rights organization reported that at least 54 people were killed this week alone in separate attacks across Benue, Borno, Kwara, and Zamfara States.
In addition to the fatalities, many others were abducted or displaced from their homes.
According to Amnesty International, farming communities in Benue and Plateau States have been ravaged by gunmen who continue to slaughter residents, sack villages, and set homes ablaze.
In parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina States, bandits reportedly enforce brutal rules and collect levies from villagers at gunpoint.
“The latest attacks on rural communities show that President Bola Tinubu and his government have no effective plan for ending years of atrocities by armed groups,” the organization said. “Gunmen are wantonly having a free reign of bloodshed across many parts of Nigeria.”
Amnesty International further warned that whatever security measures the government currently has in place are failing to stop the violence.
It condemned the authorities’ persistent inability to safeguard lives and property, describing it as “completely unacceptable.”
“The Nigerian authorities’ consistent failure to protect people must end,” the statement added. “After every attack, more attacks follow — again and again. People have been left at the mercy of gunmen.”
