#FreeZongo: TIB Plateau demands answers from Nigerian Army over continued detention

The Take It Back (TIB) Movement, Plateau State Chapter, has renewed its call for the release of Lawrence Zongo, who remains in the custody of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division in Jos, Plateau State.

The movement made the demand in a statement released on Monday after its members and executive committee members appeared on JayFM Jos to discuss Zongo’s arrest and continued detention.

According to the chapter, Zongo has been held incommunicado despite its efforts to secure his release and raise concerns about the circumstances surrounding his detention.

The movement expressed concern that its efforts had yet to produce the outcome it seeks, insisting that the Nigerian Army should explain the reason for his detention and address the questions surrounding his arrest.

“We want to make it clear that our struggle is not over, and we will not remain silent while our brother continues to be detained without clear answers to the questions surrounding his arrest,” the statement said.

The TIB chapter called on the Nigerian Army to state the offence Zongo is alleged to have committed, provide evidence to support his detention and ensure that his fundamental human rights are respected.

It maintained that anyone facing allegations should be dealt with through established legal procedures, stressing that security concerns should not be used to deny anyone their rights.

“We believe that nobody should be kept incommunicado without due process of law. If there are allegations against him, the proper legal process should be followed. No institution is above the law, and no one should be denied their rights under the guise of security,” the statement said.

The movement also pledged to continue its campaign through public advocacy, engagement with relevant authorities and other lawful means until Zongo’s case is addressed.

It urged activists, civil society organisations, journalists, human rights defenders and other Nigerians to support its demand for justice and join calls for his release.

“Our demand remains clear: Lawrence Zongo must not be forgotten, his rights must be respected, and his freedom must be secured in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The statement concluded by reaffirming TIB’s commitment to the campaign, declaring: “We will not be silent. We will not give up. Our struggle for justice continues!”
