Take It Back Movement Demands Justice for Ekiti Domestic Violence Victim, Calls on Gov. Oyebanji to Act

The Take It Back Movement has taken up the mantle of justice on behalf of the victim of domestic violence, Dr Mrs Adenike Olubiyi, in Ekiti State. In a written statement to the state government, the movement called on Governor Abiodun Oyebanji, the Chief Justice, and the Attorney General, Mr Dayo Apata (SAN), to take swift and decisive action in addressing the harrowing situation.

Speaking on behalf of the Take It Back Movement, the Head of the Gender Department, Omolola Pedro, has condemned the seemingly sluggish pace of justice in the case of domestic violence against Dr Mrs Adenike Olubiyi in Ekiti State. In a statement signed by Pedro, the movement expressed profound disappointment in the handling of what it calls a “simple case” of domestic violence. The statement emphasized the pressing need for swift justice, declaring that “justice delayed is justice denied.”

The statement read, “Delay in justice and manipulation of the system is why so many people do not come out to speak out when faced with these issues.

“Mrs Olubiyi was attacked and escaped death on September 14, 2023 after facing attacks from her husband. Her bravery, a neighbour and the police later saved her that day.

“She spent 12 days in the hospital and another six weeks on bed rest after suffering a displaced fracture of the tip of the second cervical vertebrae and a fractured segment displaced to the left posterior.

“The husband, who was a Chief Medical Director (CMD) at the state specialist hospital, was suspended, but later reinstated by December.

“After the police arrest, he was also later released on bail. The trial started October 2 and since then till now, it has been adjourned six times.”

“Could it be true that Dr Olubiyi is shielded by powerful people in the state. Because, how would we explain his refusal to show up in court on May 9. Even his lawyers were not present.

“What is delaying the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice? It was sent to the Ministry of Justice on October 31, 2023.

“Despite mobilisation of the prosecutor to produce Dr Olubiyi since he broke his bail bond by not appearing in court, he has not been produced. What is going on in the Ekiti justice system?”

The Take It Back Movement, determined to shatter the suggestion that a domestic violence case cannot be handled properly in Ekiti State, demanded that the state’s leaders ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrator, punished accordingly.

“Leniency on gender-based violence is why it keeps occurring,”, Pedro added.
