Sowore Labels Obasanjo ‘Baba Gbajue’ Following Sallah Visit to First Lady Remi Tinubu

Human rights activist and the convener of the RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore has labeled former President Obasanjo “Baba Gbajue” (In the Yoruba language, “Gbajue”, carries the meaning of “deception” or “trickery”) following his recent Sallah visit to the First Lady, Remi Tinubu.

On Monday, June 17, 2024, the public was informed of a surprise visit by former president Olusegun Obasanjo to the First Lady, Remi Tinubu, in Lagos to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid-al-Adha, commonly known as Sallah. The First Lady’s special assistant on media, Busola Kukoyi, revealed the details of the visit in a post on the same day, stating that Obasanjo had come to extend his greetings and well-wishes to the First Lady on the occasion.

“Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the First Lady of the Federal of Nigeria Senator Oluremi Tinubu after receiving the Former President who came felicitating on the Sallah Celebration on Monday 17th June,” Kukoyi wrote.

This is coming just few days after Obasanjo’s public criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies and the adoption of a floating naira policy.

Reacting to Obasanjo’s visit, Omoyele Sowore did not hold back in expressing his opinion as he took to his Facebook page. He used the phrase “people deceiving people since 1960” to make a pointed reference to the year Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule. This statement implies that Obasanjo, whose political career has spanned several decades, has been engaged in a pattern of duplicity and deception since Nigeria’s early years as a sovereign nation.

He wrote, “Baba Gbajue visits his real clients! People Deceiving People since 1960!” he tweeted.

Olusegun Obasanjo served as Head of State from 1976 to 1979, he made a dramatic return to politics in 1999. Running on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform, he was elected President of Nigeria, holding the position from 1999 to 2007.
