Take It Back Movement Exposes Alleged Cover-up in Ado-Ekiti Domestic Assault Case

Take It Back Movement has sounded the alarm after it uncovered alleged corruption in the prosecution of a domestic assault case against Dr. Olaolu Olubiyi at Magistrate Court 1 in Ado-Ekiti.

Omolola Pedro, the Head of Gender Department at Take It Back Movement, has raised serious questions about the motives of the police prosecutor and Ekiti Ministry of Justice in their handling of the domestic assault case against Dr. Olubiyi. Pedro’s statement expresses grave concerns over alleged attempts to dismiss the case, suggesting that both parties are failing in their duty to seek justice for the victim.

The Movement’s Gender Department remains deeply troubled by the possibility that the prosecution is being undermined, leaving the victim without legal recourse.

“The nature of the offence does not preclude the police from prosecuting,” Pedro stated. “However, despite possessing the original case file, the police have not shown due diligence. Only a duplicate file was forwarded to the Ekiti State Ministry of Justice for legal advice, while the original remains available for the police to proceed.”

On June 20, 2024, the arraignment of Dr. Olubiyi took place at Magistrate Court 1, with all required parties present, including the prosecution with the original case file, the defendant, and prosecution witnesses.

Magistrate Owoleso’s decision not to proceed with the arraignment, despite all parties being present and seemingly ready to begin the trial, has led to growing concerns over the direction of the case. The magistrate’s reported choice to not arraign Dr. Olubiyi and the accompanying indications of a potential dismissal, supposedly due to the Ministry of Justice’s apparent failure to assume control.

“This situation seriously questions the integrity of the judicial process in Ekiti State,” commented Dr. Nike Olubiyi, who is both the complainant and victim in the case.

“The decision to potentially strike out a case where all parties are prepared for trial undermines public confidence in our justice system.”

In the wake of these disturbing allegations, the Take It Back Movement and concerned citizens have demanded a full and swift investigation into the potential wrongdoing surrounding the case against Dr. Olubiyi. These calls come amid deep concerns about the integrity of the legal process, with the Movement emphasizing the urgent need for transparency and accountability among both the prosecution and judicial branches in order to uphold the rule of law and maintain public confidence in the system. The Movement has taken a firm stance against any attempts to sweep this issue under the rug.

“It is imperative that authorities swiftly address these concerns and ensure justice is served without any bias,” Pedro emphasised.

Dr. Olaolu Olubiyi, Chief Medical Director of Ikere Specialist Hospital, became the center of public outrage in September 2023, when damning accusations emerged that he had physically assaulted his wife, Dr. Adenike Olubiyi, an Associate Professor at Ekiti State University.

The event, sparked by the husband’s displeasure over his wife’s refusal to attend to his pregnant mistress’ medical needs, is said to have culminated in a brutal physical assault.

Horrific images of Dr. Adenike Olubiyi’s battered body, captured at the Accident and Emergency ward of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, quickly circulated on social media, unleashing a tsunami of outrage from advocates and everyday citizens alike.

In the aftermath of the alleged incident, the Ekiti State Government took decisive action, suspending Dr. Olaolu Olubiyi from his position as Chief Medical Director of State Specialist Hospital Ikere-Ekiti.

The State Ministry of Health and Human Services released an official statement announcing the suspension of Dr. Olaolu Olubiyi from his position as Chief Medical Director of State Specialist Hospital Ikere-Ekiti. Citing the grave severity of the allegations, the ministry stated that the decision was made by the State Hospitals Management Board, who found that Olubiyi had violated Ekiti Public Service Rules 030301(ii) and 030402(x), infractions that were deemed grounds for suspension.

As part of the disciplinary action, Olubiyi was immediately relieved of his duties as Chief Medical Director of State Specialist Hospital Ikere-Ekiti and ordered to surrender his responsibilities to Dr. Akinsipe Catherine Iyabo.
