Human rights lawyer Festus Ogun has weighed in on the recent controversy involving Nigerian actress Toyin Abraham.
Taking to his X page on Wednesday morning, Ogun urged Abraham to seek legal recourse through a civil lawsuit against those who defamed her, rather than resorting to alleged intimidation tactics.
He further emphasized that the reported detention of a tweep beyond the legally permitted 24 hours is unlawful and a violation of human rights. Ogun condemned these alleged actions and called for accountability from all parties involved.
He wrote, “Tell your lawyer to file civil suit against whosoever defames you. Using state apparatus to intimidate a tweep and his family members is grossly unacceptable. Keeping Ayo beyond 24 hours is equally illegal. We will also hold you accountable for human rights violations.”
Recent reports have surfaced revealing that Toyin Abraham had requested the Nigerian police to arrest a social media user named Ayo over a comment made under one of her posts.
This development has sparked outrage among the public, with many criticizing the purported misuse of law enforcement in a matter that would usually be dealt with civilly.
The incident has prompted calls for a respect for the rule of law and a condemnation of any attempts to abuse the powers of the police for personal vendettas.
