The Take It Back Movement strongly condemns the unjust arrest of Oladapo Joshua and Ejike Kelechi, two students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, by the university management at the behest of Nyesom Wike. The students were peacefully protesting against Wike’s visit to the campus.
The two students were seen raising placards with inscriptions declaring “Wike Not Welcome” on the OAU campus. They were subsequently arrested in a heavy-handed manner by unidentified individuals, including a suspected DSS official, as captured in viral social media videos, while peacefully protesting Nyesom Wike’s visit to Oduduwa Hall.
Nyesom Wike’s personality is marred by contradictions, marked by unjust demolitions, suppression of dissenting voices, and support for undemocratic stances. Given his track record, it is surprising he was invited to a conscious campus like OAU, known for valuing democratic principles and intellectual freedom.
We unequivocally demand the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested students, as their detention constitutes a blatant violation of their fundamental rights to peaceful assembly and protest. The OAU community, known for upholding democratic principles, will not be intimidated by acts of tyranny.
We warn the OAU leadership against suppressing dissenting voices, as any attempts to do so will be met with resistance. We stand in solidarity with Oladapo Joshua and Ejike Kelechi and demand their release.
